Scarlet Macaws are bright, colorful parrots native to the rainforest of Central and South America. These highly intelligent birds live in large groups and are very vocal.
Capable of mimicking a variety of sounds, including human speech, macaws are loud. Their squawks, and screeches can be heard from miles away.

Scarlet macaws are protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The northern subspecies is listed as endangered.
Their biggest threats are habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. Despite being protected by international and U.S. laws, these birds are still being taken from the wild, trafficked and sold illegally.
Why macaws don’t make good pets for most people:
- They are lifelong pets that live up to 75 years in captivity. Many outlive their owners.
- They are highly social birds that need a lot of attention and stimulation.
- They are loud. Their screams register at 100-106 decibels, about the same noise level as a jackhammer.
- They have strong beaks used to crush nuts, their bite hurts and can easily break skin.
- Everything about them is expensive. They are expensive ($2000-$4000 ). Their cages are expensive ($1,000 ). Their veterinary care is expensive.
