Verdi

The Green Tree Python is an arboreal species of snake native to New Guinea, Indonesia and Northern Australia. They have a prehensile tail which they use to anchor themselves to a branch, allowing them to strike at prey without falling. They also use their tail as a lure prey. As with all pythons the green tree python is a constrictor, meaning it suffocates its prey before swallowing it whole. Babies are a yellow or red color when born, turning green at 6-12 months old. Adults can reach up to 6.6 ft long.

Though they are not listed as endangered their population faces severe threats. The illegal pet trade is a huge threat to these beautiful sought after snakes. They are often caught in the wild and smuggled, or passed off as captive bred to pet stores. Another big threat to the species is habitat loss.

One of my favorite childhood books “Verdi ” by Janell Cannon is about green tree pythons.
