The Massasauga Rattlesnake

The Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake is Michigan’s only venomous snake. They are shy and rarely seen, but this week I was walking on a path through the woods and almost stepped on one. After jumping over the snake mid-step, I backed up and took some photos of this beautiful creature.

Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. These snakes are an important part of the ecosystem. As predators they help control the rodent population. Their population is on the decline due to habitat loss and eradication.

This snake was very shy. It never attempted to strike me. It held perfectly still when it sensed me as a threat, and it did not move until I was out of sight. Being able to see this rare animal was a treat!
