Thanks to the efforts of Senator Gaylord Nelson and the millions of Americans who participated in protests, demonstrations, and fundraisers Earth Day was born. The 1st Earth Day was April 22nd, 1970. The same year a flood of environmental legislation was passed and the EPA was created. In 1990 Earth Day went global with 141 countries and 200 million people around the world celebrating Earth Day. Today 190 countries and a billion people worldwide.

This year’s theme is “Restore our Earth.” Everyone is responsible for restoring the earth, we all depend on the earth and its natural resources, so we all need to take care of it. #RestoreOurEarth
According to the WWF, animal species populations have declined 60 percent worldwide between 1970 and 2014, due to habitat loss, land degradation , pollution, climate change and other factors, according to the WWF.

In the last decade more than 160 species of plants and animals have been declared extinct.
