Pigeons can be Beautiful

When you say pigeon most people think of the kind that live in big cities and go after your food in the park. But there are actually 175 different species of pigeons.

The Victoria crowned pigeon is arguably the most elegant and ornate species of pigeons. Named after Queen Victoria for their regal appearance. The crest of feathers on their heads looks like they are wearing a crown.

They are the largest living species of pigeons. Weighing in at about 6 lbs. Their city slicker cousins weigh under a pound. They are native to New Guinea and the surrounding islands.

The IUCN classifies the Victoria crowned pigeon as “Near Threatened.” This is mainly due to habitat loss from logging, as well as being hunted for their meat and feathers.
