ENDANGERED! The golden-headed lion tamarin, named for their long golden fur that looks like a lion’s mane. Their small claw like nails help them climb through the trees and grab small insects.
Due to habitat destruction and fragmentation they only live in a small part of Brazil. It is estimated that a mere 2-5% of their original habitat remains. Most of their habitat has been destroyed to make room for the agriculture and timber industries. Although not as common as it once was, golden-headed lion tamarins are still collected from the wild and sold in the illegal pet trade.
In an effort to boost the population multiple conservation projects have established protected land, educated farmers and started captive breeding programs.
