The smallest crocodilians

Dwarf caimans are the smallest members of the crocodilian family. Adults are on average 4-6ft long. They are native to South America. Even though they are classified as least concern on the IUCN’s red list, dwarf caimans still face several threats to their survival. Including habitat destruction, pollution, and the illegal pet trade.

Dwarf caimans have become popular pets in the reptile trade because of their small size. Even though they are the smallest crocodilians they do NOT make good pets. No crocodiles make good pets. Here are a few reasons why:

  • First off they are WILD animals, not domesticated.
  • They are big animals with big teeth and powerful jaws.
  • A 5ft caiman requires an enclosure with the minimum size of about 16ft by 10ft, half land and half water.
  • Crocodilians have relatively long life spans. Caimans can live up to 50 years in captivity.
