
The McCord’s box turtle is CRITICALLY ENDANGERED. They are native to China, where they are often harvested for traditional Chinese medicine and the illegal pet trade. They are also threatened by habitat loss and pollution.
A herpetologist first described this species in 1998 when he saw it at a Chinese market. It wasn’t until 2007 that scientists found McCord’s box turtle in the wild. Since these turtles are so rare, very little is known about them.
