African Penguins are endangered! Their population is crashing. Their population has declined by 50% in the last 30 years and 80% in the last 50 years. This decline is mainly due to overfishing and habitat destruction.

African penguins live in Southern Africa mainly Namibia, South Africa and the islands in between. They hunt for fish and invertebrates in the open ocean. Due to overfishing the penguins are unable to find food and starve.

The penguins are monogamous. They live as breeding pairs in colonies. Both parents take turns watching the eggs, feeding and protecting chicks. A large colony lives on Boulders Beach in South Africa which is where I took these photos.
Fun Fact:
African Penguins can shoot their poop up to 3 feet. This allows them to use the bathroom without leaving their nest.
