Blue-throated Macaws are listed as Critically Endangered! These beautiful birds are near extinction. There are about 300 birds in the wild. The wild population lives only in a small region in Bolivia. Although they are protected, illegal capture and selling of these birds continues to threaten their survival. Since they are so rare they sell for a very high price on the black market. Another threat is deforestation/ loss of habitat. Blue-throated macaws nest in palm trees. As the trees disappear they lose places to raise their young.

Steps are being taken to help protect Blue-throated macaws. Nest boxes are being placed in their known habitats to help increase the success of breeding and population growth. There are several reverses that have small populations of these macaws. And most importantly various conservation groups are working with locals to educate and teach them ways they can help protect the species.
