The hippopotamus is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. Their population is decreasing. Hippos are poached and killed for the meat and ivory teeth. Habitat destruction and human-conflict are other threats that hippos face.
Fun Fact: Hippos can’t swim. They push off the bottom or rocks underwater to propel themselves. They can also hold their breath for up to five minutes.
Hippos are vegetarians but they have massive canine teeth, weigh 4000-9000 lbs, and are about 15ft in length. Hippos are aggressive and shouldn’t be messed with. They kill an estimated 500 people a year in Africa.
