Seagulls…evil or misunderstood?

Who says seagulls are not elegant?… Seagulls are hated by many. They dive-bomb people and steal their food. They are loud and can spread disease through their feces. Seagulls are not evil, they are simply opportunistic hunters. If humans were not so careless dropping their food, leaving it unattended, or feeding them purposely, these birds wouldn’t have learned that humans provide easy pickings.

They are highly intelligent birds, they have been seen dropping mollusk onto rocks to crack them open, and groups of gulls imitate the sound of rain to draw earthworms to the surface. They are important predators that control insect and pest populations.

Gulls are protected in many countries, including the United States. It is illegal to kill gulls under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. There are several species of gulls that are listed as vulnerable or endangered on the IUCN Red List.

A fun fact about seagulls is that they can drink both freshwater and saltwater. They have special glands near their eyes that flush the salt out of their system.
