Great White Sharks

A Great White Shark breaching the water and showing off rows of razor-sharp teeth. These beautiful creatures are highly misunderstood and get a bad rap in the media and movies. Millions of sharks are killed by humans every year. Although their exact population is unknown scientists believe that the population is decreasing at an alarming rate. Great whites are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN!

These sharks are hunted and killed by humans for sport and bragging rights. Every year thousands of sharks get caught in fishing nets and thousands more are killed for their fins and teeth. 100 million sharks are killed each year by humans, while on average 6 humans are killed each year by sharks. In contrast, 150 people are killed by falling coconuts each year. 450 people die falling out of bed yearly in the U.S. alone.

Great whites do not seek out humans as food. Great whites, like humans, are curious creatures. But since sharks do not have hands, they explore with their teeth. Unfortunately, their teeth can do a significant amount of damage to humans. Humans are too bony for the sharks they prefer fatty and protein-rich food, like seals and sea lions.

Rethink sharks!
